Be A Man: Standing tall in the face of toxic negative stereotypes

Updated: Mar 1

Norman Mailer hit the nail on the head

“Because there is very little honor left in American life, there is a certain built-in tendency to destroy masculinity in American men.”

We have so many issues tearing at the fabric of what is US culture that we are pulled in several directions to combat each of these crises. Climate alarmism, weaponization of the justice system, election integrity, open borders, antisemitism on college campuses and across the country, and the list goes on and on. However, for the past 50 years the attack on the American male has been accepted and embraced. Now, as a society, we are starting to have a hard time defining what is male or what is a man. We all can remember the question posed to Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Jackson-Brown at "her" confirmation hearing, and where she avoided a specific answer “can you define a woman?”   The definition of what it means to be a man and subsequently how should a man conduct himself has had far reaching effects on our culture and a generation of men who have become confused as to their place in society.

For our male children and young men everywhere, I say STOP listening to media, television, movies, talk shows and empty-headed dolts with PhDs. Norman Mailer got it right. There is a lack of honor in our society and as such it has targeted males. Just a small look at TV shows like Hugh Beaumont in “Leave it to Beaver”, Robert Young in “Father Knows Best” Andy Griffith in “Andy Griffith Show” and even later with Bill Cosby (I know his issues in real life) emphasized a strong male role model who instructed their children with discipline, compassion, and accountability. They were the leaders of the family. These shows were replaced by the likes of Eugene Levey from “Schitt’s Creek”, Ed O’Neill in “Married with Children”, Jeffrey Tambor in “Arrested Development” to name a few. These men were portrayed as bubbling buffoons, devoid of leadership and virtue.

We have a dichotomy that to be a strong man you are a loner without commitments; an individual unencumbered by family obligations or if a man has a family he is a weak commercial character that is the anti-thesis of manhood. The idea of the strong family man is the exception rather than the rule.

A real man's power resides in his innate values, his sense of balance, intellect, his ability to hold his own in any situation, and his mature handling of relationships. A real man treats a partner, not as an object but with value, with strengths and weaknesses and allows his strengths and weaknesses to be seen but he is not dominated in his relationships.

Men, true men, need to be real men for all seasons in the modern world and not bend the knee to every fad, movement, or comment from the shrills on “The View.”  The idea of manhood is found in scripture. God is the epitome of consistency and flawless teaching. In Micah 6:8 we can read one of many examples of what God has called men to be.

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

To be a Man, we must develop every element of our masculinity, not just one area. We must become a master of the 3 Ps: Physical, Professional and Personal. In the journey of life, hidden within each one of us lies immense potential waiting to be unleashed. It is this latent ability that, when realized, paves the way for a truly fulfilling and meaningful existence. But , let's be clear from the outset - this isn't about finding shortcuts; it's about putting in the hard work and effort to achieve your aspirations.
